Summary
Mr M complained that Creditspring irresponsibly provided him with £600 credit in December 2023, repayable at £50 monthly plus £10 monthly fee. Creditspring verified Mr M's income at £3,250 and identified existing credit commitments of £1,210 and living costs of £1,247, leaving approximately £793 for the loan repayments and unforeseen costs. The ombudsman found the credit checks were reasonable and proportionate, the credit appeared affordable based on the information gathered, and there were no adverse indicators suggesting unsustainable repayment. The complaint was not upheld.
The Ombudsman's reasoning
The ombudsman found that Creditspring's pre-lending checks were reasonable and proportionate for the £600 credit limit offered. The verified income of £3,250 minus existing commitments of £1,210 and living costs of £1,247 left sufficient disposable income of £793 to cover the £60 monthly Creditspring repayments plus unforeseen costs. Even using Mr M's lower stated net income of £2,903, the credit would have appeared affordable. There was nothing in the information gathered to suggest Mr M would be unable to sustainably repay the loan.
